Morning glory Ipomoea nil

Asagaoso (Varieties of the Japanese morning glory) (block-print) by Sizian-Keiei (1817)

Figure 12, Dairin, Large-flower

Copyright 1998-2017 Yoshiaki Yoneda

The large flower is called Higarakasa (a parasol), which measures 3 sun 6 bu in diameter, corresponding to ca. 11cm (1 "sun" is equal to ca. 3.03cm and 1 "bu" to ca. 0.303cm in old Japanese units of measure). This flower has a lot of rays. However only one part of a leaf is drawn in this figure, we cannot understand the cause of enlargement. The flower that has bloomed to a maximum size is called a large flower at that age. The size of the flower shown in the figure indicates that a normal flower size of 5 to 6 cm in diameter is doubled at that era of 1810's.
