Gojdics, Genus, Euglena 130, pl. 21, fig. 6 a~b, 1953;
Wolowski, Algol. Stud. 66: 80, fig. 41~44, 1992.
Cells 82-92 μm long, 16-22 μm broad; moderately to strongly metabolic; elongate-fusiform to cylindrical, anterior end truncated to rounded, posterior end swelling slightly and constricted into a short non-hyaline cauda, 2-4 μm; periplast spirally striated; chloroplast numerous, without pyrenoid, discoid, parietal, distribute at the posterior portion of cell; paramylon grains very numerous, rod-shaped or discoid, locate at the anterior portion of the cell; nucleus spherical, 5-9 μm in diameter, located at the back portion of the cells; locomotory flagellum one half body length, 42 μm; eyespot curved lamella-shaped, with the convex face outward , prominent, red to orange color, 2.5 μm in diameter.
Occurrence in Chia-Yi:
It was widely collected in this area, including Min-Sion, Hou-Pi, Tai-Po.Taxonomic consideration:
The most prominent character in identification of this species is the distribution of chloroplasts and paramylon grains. Chloroplast located posteriously; paramylon grains anteriously (Krienitz, 1994).Note:
According to personal observations indicate that the nucleus of fresh collections of algae in summer can't be watched under light microscope (1000 X), because of its abundance of plastid or paramylon grains.The amount of chloroplasts and paramylon grains seem change with seasonal change.In actively photosynthetic seasons the paramylon grains occupied large portion of cell body,under light microscope obersevations indicate that the anterior portions scatter large amount of paramylon grains,samll amount of chloroplasts occupied at the back of cells; in weakly photosynthetic seasons the chloroplasts dominated and mingled with paramylon grains.
