Trachelomonas Genus: Euglenas in a close fitting lorica; a single long flagellum extends through small opening; lorica with or without short collar; yellow to brown (How to know the protozoa, 1979). Lorica often possesses numerous spines, composed of ferric hydroxide impregnated with brown manganic compound (Kudo, 1966).
Species: 30-60 μm long, Spines around rim of collar, also on rear 1/4 of lorica, fresh water (How to know the protozoa, 1979).

Trachelomonas armata var. longispina (Playfair) Deflandre: Lorica ellipsoid, no collar, covered with short dented projections, long spiny projections (3-6 μm long) at posterior end, size 41-44 μm long, 32-34 μm wide (Illustrations of The Japanese Fresh-water Algae, 1977).
