Introduction from China to Japan is said to have occurred in 1758 (Houreki 8). Flower tube is long and narrow. Corolla is ca. 5 cm in diameter. Flowers are night-blooming. The name derives from the needle-like projections on the stem (Hari means needle). It was called Tianqie in China and was used as a famine relief plant.
